Epic Games MegaGrant:
Real Time City-Scale Data Streaming to Unreal Engine

Buro Happold
2022, 2023

At Buro Happold, I acted as a primary contributor to an Epic Games MegaGrant funded project investigating real-time, city-scale data streaming to Unreal Engine. Working in a team of geospatial data scientists, urban planners, cloud architects and programmers, I developed innovative new procedural shading methods to consistently and compellingly render hundreds of square kilometres of masterplanning data streamed on-the-fly from Buro Happold’s backend data centre. My approach brought non-expert stakeholders closer to the planning process than before, allowing them to instantly visualise and manipulate design data as it enters the production pipeline. I also acted as UI/UX Lead on the project and developed new parametric modelling tools powered by ESRI CityEngine.

Ken Pimentel, Architecture Industry Manager at Epic Games described the result as going ‘so far beyond any engineering view I’ve ever seen’. Discipline Director Anthony Tuffour presented the project at Autodesk University 2023 in Las Vegas (video available here).
